It is reported that 3D spherical cells can generate about 101% more energy than conventional flat solar cells. Measurements also show that round cells offer a maximum of 10% lower temperature than flat cells while collecting less dust. A group of scientists from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology of Saudi Arabia (KAUST), the University of Jeddah, and the University of California, Berkeley demonstrated a spherical solar cell with interdigital back contact (IBC) with higher heat dissipation and reduced accumulation compared to a cell. conventional flat panel solar.
The single-crystal 3D device, which is reported to have an efficiency of 18.93%, is also said to have a 101% higher power output than flat cells.

Design and prototype:
Flat solar panels still have major limitations in utilizing the sunlight available on a daily basis. The new spherical solar cell design aims to increase the potential for gathering solar energy from almost any angle without requiring expensive moving parts to track the visible movement of the sun across the sky.
The prototype of a spherical solar cell designed by Saudi researchers is a small blue ball that you can easily hold in one hand like a ping pong ball. Indoor experiments with solar simulators have shown that, depending on the sunlight-reflecting background material in spherical solar cells, these solar cells can achieve between 15% and 100% more power than flat solar cells of the same footprint. The research team hopes its nature-inspired design can do the same in future field trials in different parts of the world.
