Every day people write to me saying "you should head up stream and look for the source of the gold" or "You will find better gold up stream".
Sometimes that is the case. Gold deposits usually start in the mountains, sometimes hundreds of kilometres away, sometimes just a few. And through erosion they carry gold loaded gravels down stream where we often end up panning.
The thing is, gold pay dirt is deposited over thousands, even tens of thousands or millions of years.
Quite often the original lode deposit has been completely weathered away. And if not more often than not the old timers mined it out already.
So where is all the gold coming from then?
In all my years doing this I've found one consistent truth, more often than not its shedding out of pay gravels left up high on the river banks and mountain sides.
