Russian oligarchs Sergey Protosenya and Vladislav Avayev, who lived in Girona, Spain, and Moscow, Russia, reportedly killed their family members first and then committed suicide on April 20. Spanish media reported that two Russian oligarchs were being investigated for killing their family members earlier the same day and then committing suicide. According to police sources, Sergey Protosenya, 55, a vice-president of a natural gas company called Novatek, killed his wife (53) and daughter (16) with a knife at his home and then committed suicide in the incident on April 20 in the settlement of Lloret de Mar in Girona. It was reported that the police arrived at the scene by phone after Protosenya's son, who lives in France, had not heard from his family, came to the house in Girona and saw the bodies inside. The news was first reported as domestic violence, but on the same date, another Russian oligarch living in Moscow, Vladislav Avayev, a former deputy chairman of Gazprombank and a former senior Kremlin executive, also raised other doubts when it was announced that he had committed suicide by killing his wife and young daughter. The Spanish press wrote that the police are also exploring different options regarding the incident in Girona.
