Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy slammed the United Nations Security Council for its inactivity in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine during his address on Tuesday and questioned whether the agency is still effective.

“So where is the security that the Security Council needs to guarantee – it’s not there. Where is the peace?” he said.

“It’s obvious that the key institution of the world which must ensure the… of any aggression to peace simply cannot work effectively.”

Zelenskyy described a horrific scene in the Kyiv Suburb of Bucha, which he revisited yesterday after Ukrainian troops retook the city and following reports of the alleged extra-judicial killings of civilians by Russian troops.

He also proposed the UN Security Council remove Russia so that it “cannot block decisions about its own aggression, its own war” or come forward with its own ideas for reform.
