The pick up can be come blocked in as little as a few thousand kilometers anything from a few thousand to up to 20,000 km so wasting $50 plus the work involved every hundred thousand kilometers is not going to save the engine but the biggest concern here is the demonstration of the lack of understanding of the problem by saying this would prevent the problem.
