Several materials, including lithium, lead acid, nickel-cadmium, and nickel metal hydride, are used to create EV batteries. Depending on the type and model of their EV, the battery's precise construction will vary.
The most common kind of EV battery is a lithium battery. They last a very long time and are lightweight. Although lead acid batteries are the least expensive alternative, they are also the heaviest and have a shorter lifespan than lithium batteries. Lead acid batteries are more expensive than nickel-cadmium batteries, although the latter are lighter and have a longer lifespan. The most expensive EV battery is the nickel-metal hydride battery, which is also the lightest and has the longest lifespan.
You have to make trade-offs when selecting an EV battery. The optimum choice for the majority of commuter applications is lithium batteries. In comparison to lead-acid varieties, they are lighter and more affordable, and they last for a long time.
In addition to powering the electric motor and cabin amenities, electric car batteries also supply electricity to the infotainment system. They are increasingly being used to power lane sensors, vehicle-to-everything (V2X), autonomous driving, and other advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) devices.
The cells that make up a battery are connected in a series and make up each battery. An electrolyte serves as a barrier between the positive and negative electrodes found in each cell. Electricity travels from the positive electrode to the negative electrode when the battery is being charged, which causes ions to move through the electrolyte. When the battery is discharging, this process is reversed, causing electricity to move from the negative electrode to the positive electrode.
A battery's capacity which is measured in amp-hours (Ah), determines how much electricity it can hold. A battery's capacity to store energy increases with the amount of Ah it has.
The early batteries used in EVs were frequently big and heavy, making them challenging to install and move. Moreover, a lot of people were unable to afford EVs due to the fact that they were frequently expensive. These difficulties have been mostly fixed as battery technology has advanced. Even so, EVs nevertheless occasionally run into battery-related issues.
Thermal runaway is among the most typical issues with EV batteries. The battery releases a lot of energy when its temperature rises to an unsafe level, which is known as thermal runaway.
