China accounts for more than one-sixth of the world’s population. However, after 4 extraordinary decades in which China’s population has swelled from 660 million to 1.4 billion, is now on track to turn down. And this downturn is for the first time since the great famine of 1959. Over a period of a few years, China’s population crisis has changed from a social worry to a state emergency. It is because population decline is now affecting the Commerce and industrial sector. While many countries are dealing with overpopulation, China being the most populated country of 1.4 billion people has a different issue. Low birth rates are becoming the nation’s misery. Let’s get into how did low birth rates begin?
It has been decades since how the present destruction in China began. In the late 1900s, China’s giant issue on hands was overpopulation. The growth of population versus the agricultural output was not sustainable enough to avoid hunger. Hence it was decided across the nation to implement a set of very strict policies widely referred to as the One Child Policy. Under this policy, families were restricted to having one child only. The goal was that limiting families to one child will leave every family to be with fewer mouths to feed eventually leading to a well-balanced population. This worked wonders and the birth rate fell like anything over the decades. It not only met the intended targets but also led the country into its current state.
